Technical and Financial Assistance

You might be surprised to learn that a number of technical support and financial incentive programs are available to farmers who are interested in setting aside some of their land for pollinator habitat in the United States. Typically, these are USDA programs administered through either the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) or the Farm Service Agency (FSA). These agencies provide planning assistance and cost-sharing for the creation of new wildlife habitat that can include a special focus on pollinators. In some cases, they provide actual rental payments to growers for taking erodible land out of production.

Historically, these programs were intended to reduce erosion, protect water quality, and provide habitat for wildlife such as pheasants and white-tailed deer. Legislative support for pollinator conservation through the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 has made the promotion and conservation of pollinator habitat a priority among USDA conservation programs.
